Clayton said on KJR this morning

John Clayton said on KJR 950 this morning that Adam Scheftler of the NFL Network is reporting that the Seahawks are currently looking into potential trades for Hasselbeck, and if a trade is not found, could just simply "release" or "cut" Hasselbeck sometime prior to the February "Free Agency" time-line.

If Ruskell can find someone willing to give up a good pick(s) for Hass, cutting him would be something close to pure stupidity. Unless there is some other bizarre cap rules loophole cutting Hasselbeck would bring around a 2.9 mil cap hit (I think), whereas after next season he carries no hit if we get rid of him.

This is one area that I have questions about Ruskell's abilities at GM; his continual throwing away cap money with little to no return. Constantly pushing cap hits into the future for a little freedom now has shown to be a foolish tactic in the NFL, just ask the 49ers who are still trying to recover. We just are getting free of the Alexander and Wistrom cap hits and are still buried under the Kerney signing along with some others. The cap hit doesn't really drop enough to warrant cutting Hass, especially since there is no proven guy to take his place. Wallace may very well be that guy, but I don't know if Ruskell should wager his job on it.

So if Ruskell is moving Hasselbeck out, does he give him one last "victory lap tour" season, like he gave Holmgren?

You know, gets to say his goodbyes during the year, and then get ride of on a company provided Harley at the end?

If they are looking in to a trade as reported by Clayton who heard it from Sheftler from NFL Network (sounds like a game of telephone). What are they going to get for an old QB with potential back issues, not much. As you said releasing him and eating the cap hit would be just plain ignorant, if anything he makes a good backup to seneca, way better than a healthy frye. Seneca played well this year (11 td, 3 int, 1532 yds, 87 rtg) he has experience starting and with our troubles at O-line a mobile QB could be a blessing. QB isn't where the issues with this team begin, it is one of the more solid positions on the team. Spend the time and energy on other facets of the team.

Here is Scheftler's blog. Click here to go to link

And let's be clear about the term "cap hit". That is the total dollars remaining on the contract that was either guaranteed, or remains on the yearly average of the signing bonus.

Without explaining the calculation details, for example, when Shaun Alexander was cut in 2008, the cap hit was $6+M (he had 6 years remaining on his contract), compared to his 2008 salary of around $8M. The Seahawks saved almost $2M of cap space by cutting him.

With Hasselbeck, the cap hit if he were cut during the off-season would only be $3.2M (only 2 years left on his contact), compared to his 2009 salary of $9.5M, so the Seahawks could save a whopping $6.3M against the 2009 salary cap if Hasselbeck is traded or released.

With that $6.3M in cap room, and the actual savings of $9.5M, the Seahawks could potentially find a QB of the future, as Seneca Wallace is really just an average #2 QB, who likely would win between 5 and 7 games as starter for an entire season.

I guess the obvious is that if Hasselbeck remains on the team, and then can't play in 2009, it is Hasselbeck "victory lap", just like Holmgren had.

Even Jim Zorn says Matt is a Championship calibur Q B. He has given this team and city his best and I think he should be given another season to see what he can do to get us back to the playoffs w/o Holmgren. Any QB in the NFL might be on the IR next year. I.E. (Tom Brady) so that is not a valid argument. An offensive line would be the best thing to worry about, w/o one no QB will help. Getting rid of good players due to the salary cap hasn't proven well in the past, we could really use Hutch about now and should have given him anything he needed to stay. Maybe Matt might not even have gotten injured if he was there and I am sure our running game would be much better.

"Even Jim Zorn says Matt is a Championship calibur Q B."

Now that is a surprise. Jim Zorn, who gets much of the credit, says Hasselbeck is a good quarterback. What is he going to say? "Uh, he's not that good". I don't think so.

And yes, it does appear that most of the Seahawks fans (at least the ones who state their opinions) want Hasselbeck on the Seahawks next season regardless of his condition, and even if he can not play.

As showdog100 stated, "He has given this team and city his best", and apparently that alone is enough to mandate keeping him on the roster at $9.5M.

And I'm sure that the Seahawks fans will expect Ruskell and Mora to win, while the salary is spent for Matt to watch from the sidelines, and Seneca is running around on the field.

Winning is maybe important, but definitely down the list. Reminiscing about the past is obviously the first priority. Number 2 must be find ways to blame Ruskell for everything!

I might be one of the few who actually read Schefter's blog. I must admit I'm baffled by the flap on this.

Shefter opines that Hasselbeck's job security took a decrease with the departure of Holmgren and states that if he is is cut or traded, it will free $6.3 mil in cap money, a nice piece of change. The key word in the sentence is "if". I could also make the case that "if" frogs had wings they wouldn't bump their behinds when they land from a jump.

He then turns immediately around and asks if you cut/trade him, who do you replace him with? Shefter points out that there is no obvious successor like in Philly. I agree.

So all this comes down to something like: If you can get D-Mac, this might be an interesting discussion. Otherwise, it is just idle speculation. Unless his injuries end up being career-ending. In that case, they'll cut him, use the freed up money elsewhere and add QB to their long list of needs.

Are you telling me that there won't be a couple of teams interested in Hasselbeck? I'll give you four right now who would be looking hard, San Francisco, NY Jets, Minnesota, Redskin's. If Minnesota has a healthy Hasselbeck yesterday they win that game easily. I don't know if I like the idea of trading him, so I'll sit on the fence for a while on this until I can sort it out. My first reaction is: I'm not sold that Seneca is a starting QB in this league, especially w/out a great RB. I do think there are trades to be had for Hasselbeck though.

If the front office cares, the team will win.

I think you misunderstood me or were replying to someone else. If he has a career-ending injury, no one in their right mind would trade for him. If he hasn't a career-ending injury, why trade him unless you can really net up big on the deal?

No, I was just giving my opinion in general on this topic, nothing to do with what you said. I think we pretty much agree on this one.

As I posted awhile back I do believe Ruskell will remove anything Holmgren. I also believe they will look at Senca to be the type of QB that Vick was for Alanta but with more control inthe pocket. I see Hasselbeck going to the Redskins to hook up with Zorn.

How about swapping AP for Hasselbeck? Then you'd have a real QB and Seattle would have a real RB. What a deal!
